Found mastiff

Postby Anne on Thu Jan 14, 2010 9:55 am

I just read this on another list. Could a rescue advisor make contact please?
Anne

Hi All

We have picked up a mastiff today from a person who claims to have been given the dog by a character well known to us and RSPCA!

The person who gave the dog away claims to have got it 2 months ago from a traveller site. (which one is not known and the story highly unlikely knowing this person)

The 'finder' informed us and the dog has now been seized.

The dog is a male entire mastiff, tan coloured with a dark mask. He is in good condition, well behaved and well trained. No microchip or collar and tag. (no surprise there)

Could you all check your lost /stolen records please as alarm bells are ringing that this dog has an owner going frantic for him somewhere.

Many thanks

<de-lurk>

Has anyone any further news on this boy?

I am based near Salisbury and work in winchester so could spin by and check up on him if needed.

Didnt want to just go calling them up but not liking the idea this lad is stuck in kennels either....

By the way, Hi all, My names Matt, my Mastiff's are Princess and Amber and I've been lurking around the forum for a while (just took my own sweet time registering)

Regards

Matt

I have not heard that he has been claimed. More often than not these dogs turn out not to be mastiffs, but if you are in the area it would be great if you check him out.

Unhelpful bunch, they declined to give me ANY information regarding the current staus of this dog except that it had "Gone to kennels to be rehomed"

I asked which kennels and was told they cannot give me that information so I asked for my number to be passed to the kennels, dont know if that will actually happen or not.

Is finding out information about possible dogs in distress always like pulling teeth or did i just bounce off a jobs-worth?

I find it extraordinary that after posting an appeal for help / information (albeit not directly to this board) they then refuse to discuss the matter, bizzare.

Should I try to follow up or am I banging my head on a wall?

Thanks for trying. I have sent a request to the dog search people for them to kick some backsides!

This is quite normal.
Once in the system of one of these rescue centres they are out of our control. The centres will not accept any help from us. I wonder if it is a "money" thing.

The sad thing is that we know the breed and their ways - Centres do not understand them. They often end up in the wrong homes because of this and we end up with them anyway.

There is a poor girl in Scotland whose owner asked us for help. I got back to her the following day with an excellent home - a vet who had already rescued a few from us in the past. Unfortunately she was impatient and in the space of 20 hours had given this girl to a Centre.
The "vet" contacted them showing her interest in the Mastiff. She was then housechecked etc but refused. The reason being that they had teenage children and another Mastiff !!!!
Nothing more we can do to help but I am afraid the original owner got a curt text from me saying that the poor Mastiff will probably now be in kennels for a long time due to her impatience.

Doesnt make a lot of sense does it?

Still, I will continue to chip in if I think I can help out with anything that comes up, maybe once I get a little more used to these scenario's I will pick up some tricks for getting through jobsworthy council employees a bit more effectively, I'm sure I wasnt as effective as I could have been I simply wasnt expecting the equivalent of a brick wall.

Ahh well, we live we learn.

Thanks for the feedback
