Mastiff Diet, What Foods?

Postby MightyMastiff on Mon May 31, 2010 6:14 am

Hi All

I am a new member to this site and own a 10 month old Mastiff called Mighty.

I was wondering what food & diets other Mastiff Owners use?

My boys current diet is 3 Meals & Apple Per day (Other Fruit & Cheese used as treats / Bones & Apples used to clean teeth)

Breakfast
Natural Yoghurt & Dry Food (OmniPro)

Lunch
Banana & Dry Food (OmniPro)

Cored Apple (Skin On)

Dinner
Brocolli, Carrots, Meat or Fish, Dry Food (OmniPro) Every Night

Other Vegatables used
Asparagus, Sprouts, Kale, Peppers, Avocado, Garlic

Fruit
Oranges/Clementines, Bananas, Apples,

I squeezed a lemon into his water which he really enjoyed, should i be doing this?

My boy has no issues eating or going to the toilet, he goes 3 - 5 times per day and stools are always consistent.

I was advised that i should use the Orijen Dry Food brand.

Should i change dry foods or should i stick with what i am doing?

Just looking for some advice please and am interested in other diets, foods mastiff owners use.

Many Thanks

Luke

Hi Luke

I am no expert so I wouldnt really like to comment on what you feed other than saying that is one spoilt boy x

I have always fed my dogs fresh tripe (not the frozen stuff you find in a freezer at the pet shops) and biscuit.
They have always done well on that.
At the age of your dog mine have been on 2 meals a day.

I try not to give too many treats but if I do it is normally a bit of cold meat like ham etc.

You will find what suits your dog just make sure he gets the correct vitamins ad minerals etc to get a healthy growth and strong bones.

Debbie.

Thanks for the response Debbie.

Have you ever added in supplements for your dogs?

I was advised to start adding some joint formula tablets to his meals but never have.

Thanks

Firstly a warm welcome to the forum and we hope you will post some pictures.
Sounds like your young man is living the life of Riley.
Like Debbie our dogs are fed tripe preferably in chunks to develop facial muscle and a good biscuit, most days they have an egg. Baked liver and cheese as treats . A piece of ham is good wrapper for any medication they need to take. From about a year old they have 2 meals a day. With experience one knows if they want a bit extra though usually its a bit less as many mastiffs are kept rather on the heavy side and perhaps do not have as much exercise as they need. We are lucky having plenty of space for them to roam in. Good quality food in my opinion should contain all they need in the form of vitamins etc. A marrow bone once a week, usually given when we are out. Some vets do not like bones to be fed. Mastiffs can eat some undesirable stones socks etc so do watch for this sort of thing. You will find some general guides to feeding at http://www.mastiffclub.com and you can always ask on this forum.
Your breeder should have provided you with an informative diet sheet and always be your first port of call with any problems as they will know their lines best.
If you get half the pleasure from your mastiff as we have had from ours you have a lot to look forward to.
cheers
